"I Don't Want to Spend Money on my Teeth; It is Too Much!"

Yesterday, we were graced by the presence of a teacher in our office. She has been a patient for over 20 years. She has a very back molar which has had a tooth-colored crown for over 12 years. That crown partially broke due to the forces on her teeth, and she did not want to pay for another crown. She did not want to spend that much money on her tooth. However, the tooth was at risk of needing a root canal. The defect and decay were quite deep. I can certainly understand her concern. I myself do not want

Selecting a Dentist

Many patients feel compelled to find a dentist within their dental plan. That seems to make sense, certainly. Many patients have a dental plan, and they want to take advantage of a “benefit” offered to them through an employer. I get that. However, what does this mean? For those of you choosing a dentist from a dental plan, the list is very limited to those dentists and dental entities who are willing to limit their fees within a fee schedule. In exchange for providing services for less, these dentists and dental entities are getting their office marketed to a group

Summer: a Season for Wisdom Teeth Extractions, Students, Teachers, and Administrators

Many students are already off  from school, and still many others are finishing up their studies. With the rigors of the regular school year completed, many students, teachers, and administrators have more time available to obtain their needed preventive care or dental treatment. Moreover, this is especially a great time for students to consider having those wisdom teeth, which have been recommended for extraction, extracted. With the summer season being somewhat short, now is the time to make these appointments. Within my dental practice, over 90% of our June appointments with our hygienist are full. Then, after obtaining your preventive

The Zika Virus: 2nd Post, Another Look

In Time magazine, the cover story for the week of May 16, 2016, is “The Zika Virus.” I have decided to summarize the information for you, in order to provide an update for my first post on this subject. There are increased concerns this summer that the mainland of the United States will have a spread of Zika. The Congress thus far has failed to provide emergency funding to battle the virus. However, the city of Dallas is predicted to have a low potential for the virus in July 2016. To provide you with some facts on the Zika virus,

Not All Toothaches Require Root Canal Therapy!

Well, it happened again this week. We had three patients with a toothache. For many patients and for quite a few dentists, this may mean the need for  root canal treatment. However, this is not necessarily true, at all. Evidence-based dentistry and thoroughness in diagnosis and treatment planning often indicates another manner to treat. There are many things that can contribute to a toothache. Just because you have a toothache does not at all mean that you should assume you need root canal treatment. In fact, I am willing to admit, and I am publishing now which I have never
