Many want to find a dentist who saves them money. Many patients opt for a managed care insurance plan dentist or for a “coupon dentist.” I can understand how that may save them money today, yet will that managed care insurance plan or coupon save them money in the future? Feel free to peruse my website on that. There are things to consider with managed care insurance plans and with coupons. For the purpose of this post, I see three things that may save patients thousands of dollars over that of any other thing, including managed care dental insurance. These three things are honesty, conservativeness, and quality of care.
Honesty definitely has the effect of saving patients thousands and thousands of dollars. There are indeed times when a crown is not needed, and there are indeed times when a root canal or a “deep cleaning” are not needed. Having a dentist you can trust and who is honest can provide the appropriate care based on evidence-based dentistry. Again, this saves patients thousands of dollars.
Moreover, conservativeness has the effect of saving patients thousands of dollars. There are times when no care is needed and things may heal on their own or may not become a problem. There are other times when doing less is better than doing more. As a dentist, it is odd for me to let me to let patients know that there is nothing as good as their natural teeth, and that less dental work is better. They do look at me strangely. However, I am being serious. Once dental restorations are done, there is an associated frequency of repair or replacement. With all this said, if there is indeed a problem, dental restoration may be the only way to solve the problem. Being conservative in this regard saves patients thousands of dollars.
Lastly, the quality of care from the dentist may also save patients thousands and thousands of dollars. If dental work is done with some significant compromise or imperfection, the chances of needing replacement sooner escalates significantly. At times, the replacement is needed in a very short period of time. If often floors me when patients will place their trust in a dentist solely because their fees are low or because they are “in-network” with their insurance plan. Many patients do not put any more research into their dentist selection other than that, for their only set of natural teeth. Low fees and being in-network does not in any way guarantee thousands of dollars in dental savings.
So, the honestly, conservativeness, and quality of care from your dentist really does matter in saving you thousands of dollars.
