Finding a dentist can be a frustrating ordeal. Times have changed.
With the onset of dental insurance and now Obamacare, with the marketing of dentistry becoming more like that of a retail store, and with dental practices becoming owned more frequently by corporate entities and non-practicing dentists within the same facility, patients are becoming increasingly confused and frustrated. We see this almost every week within my own privately-owned, traditional, single-dentist general dental practice. Patients are often being misled into thinking they are being treated within a privately-owned dental practice, patients are often feeling “bated and switched” upon by advertising and marketing plans, and patients are often feeling pressured to buy services they had not intended. Moreover, patients are often pressured to buy services they do not even need. We see all this way too often.
We have an option for you. Instead of just following the list of dentists in the listing of “preferred providers” in your insurance booklets from your employer’s human resources department, perhaps you should do some research online. Research information is provided by many third-party companies that obtain or research reviews from patients of dental practices. This research can be quite telling of what a particular dental office is like. Some of these companies may allow more control by the dental offices than others. Some may allow dental offices to “entice” patients to write reviews within their own office; we find this practice to be potentially dishonest and a bit disturbing. For this reason you should perhaps look into various websites.
These actual reviews can offer much in the way of information on the dentist and his staff. The more reviews that are posted for a particular dentist, the more reliable the results can be. If some very few practices have a disproportionately greater number of reviews than others within the same ratings, they may be “enticing” patients in some way. These few practice are somehow obtaining a statistically significant greater number of reviews for some reason….
